have to win because president obama was so bad. there was no philosophy to it. mitt romney's campaign was kind of the end of the line of the conservative era that began coherently with ronald reagan in 1980. mitt romney was the ultimate remainder man. that's why they have an easier time of dumping on him right now. >> so the clown car has backed up to run over mitt romney. that's the image for the night tonight. >> yes, it is. >> like that woman who didn't like her husband, remember she drove over her husband in the parking lot and drove over him again. i don't want to get involved in that legal case but i do remember the pictures. let's go to john heilemann here. is this the clown car as howard beautifully put it backing up over the guy that outcorkoutdorm and won the election? >> some of these people are not certifiable clowns who are saying these things about romney though i don't disagree with howard's characterization in general. i do think -- >> gingrich -- >> i think it's fair to say that part of romney's problem was that he was really always an incredibly bad fit with the repu

. although president obama says it would be, quote, preferable to avoid a ground war, he is making support of israel clear. >> there's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders so we are fully supportive of israel's right to defend itself from missiles landing on people's homes and workplaces and potentially killing civilians. >> joining us now from gaza is nbc's reporter. what's the latest this morning? >> reporter: good morning, mika. they've pushed that up now over the past six days of fighting the death toll stands at 95 palestinians, 23 of them children, more than 640 wounded palestinians since this conflict began last wednesday. one of the incidents you referred to and one that's drawing a lot of national media attention into what exactly happened when this family was killed. it took place sunday morning and it was the house of a top hamas official. in that house were several families. it was a three-story building with 12 people inside of it. all 12 people were killed. ten of those 12 were from a single family including fo

obama and his organization. this is a time when less than 12% of the entire country is organized. it's about 7% in the private sector, 35% in the public sector. if we were not allowing unions to organize already civil service-type jobs unions right now would be but a 7% sliver of the entire economy. megyn: but the unions maintain and richard trumpka came out, he's the afl-cio president, he said don't be so quick to blame the union. he seems to be defending even the baker's union by saying they use bain-style wall street srul taours who made themselves rich by making america poor he says it was consistently poor management that drove hostess into the ground but the workers who are going to pay the price. >> it's true in every company. people who work for an organization are the beneficiaries of great leadership, they are the victims of bad leadership. that has never -- there is no way in which to create a disconnect between the two. this is a company that has been horribly managed. there is no doubt about it. megyn: when you go through bankruptcy three times. they tried to reorganize

believe the president, president obama, is doing enough to try to achieve a cease-fire? >> i'm sure he is. i'm sure he's engaged with the egyptians and the turks, with the europeans, engaged with us. but the key here is -- i think the egyptians -- i spoke to some of their officials this afternoon, they are exerting every possible effort there is in order to reach a comprehensive cease-fire. i think they can achieve it. provide the guarantees for all sides. >> is the palestinian authority -- what i'm hearing, i think the answer is yes. but you tell me. is the palestinian authority -- you're associated with the president, mahmoud abbas, on the same page right now with hamas in gaza? >> look, today, we are not the authority. we are all palestinians, wolf. it is our people. we know we want to reach peace. that's our ticket to security and peace. unfortunately, we have been unable for 20 years to achieve this goal. today what we need to focus on is to reach a cease-fire, what we need to focus on is to stop this. failure should not be an option. and i think we can do it tonight. the egyptians a

the conventional wisdom here in washington is that president obama is sort of in the driver's seat with these negotiations. that being said, i think that there's a good deal of pressure on both sides here. if, indeed, we go over the fiscal cliff, there are a number of things that republicans are tremendously concerned about, not the least of which is the tax increases, the expiration of the payroll tax holiday, capital gains tax increase. there are a number of things frightening republicans right now, there's a number of things that should truly be frightening democrats. democrats control the white house, they have a larger majority in the senate. there is certainly some onus on president obama, the white house and senate majority leader harry reid to show that the democratic party can govern in a moment of great fiscal crisis. so i think there's a tremendous amount of pressure to go around here. while the conventional wisdom is that the president is in the driver's seat, i think that there's plenty of leverage to be had on capitol hill. jon: and republicans are not likely going to
